DEATH SHANTIES : Death Shanties is a new mixed media balls-to-the-wall Free Jazz group featuring Alex Neilson (drums), Sybren Renema (alto/ baritone sax) and Lucy Stein (painting/ projections). The group combine references to Medieval music, Sea Shanties and Field Hollars with the ecstatic cry of classic 1960s fire music. Stein uses primitive devotional images, food stuffs and even her own hair in visceral, highly textured painted projections making Death Shanties a unique and immersive live experience.
“Lucy painted across Alex and Sybren using an overhead projector but there was more to it than that. She was clearly feeding off the music. Her brush strokes were in perfect synchronisation with Alex’s drum explorations. Was Lucy painting like a drummer or was Alex drumming like a painter? I think they met each other half way in an explosion of rhythm and colour.”
Apostille : Of his brilliant album Paper Dirt someone wrote ""Recorded in Nunhead. Michael Kasparis aka Apostille, trance-pop zombie and kind-eyed record clerk blow-up doll, drifts between industrial sub-circuits: afflicted synth-pop, grim beats, dour night-stalker energies, electro-punk steamers.
He plays synthesizers like felt-tipped markers, bending the tedium of minimal synth into figure eights and stussy S’s. Keyboards bleed into each other, kick drums blister, melodies dry. Some parts remind me of jabbing a magic marker into the table and watching ink run and crust over.
Apostille sings too, like someone who finds it amusing. There are definitely some pretty raw and dark moments here; London remains a grey and unrelenting shit hole. But I also hear something vaguely farcical, like he’s deflecting some seriousness for the sake of the groove."

Richard Youngs : "grand-meister of contemporary British improv, spiritual son of Eddie Prevost and Maddy Prior; gentle manipulator of English hymn-notics and religious incantations; protege, challenger and radicaliser of folk, blues, rock, minimalism and improvisation; translator for the sea and the rain and the sky; ambassador to war and peace, to love and anguish". - Melody Maker
So y'know, munch on that.
